As I write this, 1046, and that's not counting the knwon dupes. 1040 would be pretty close to the mark.

But about 1/3 of them have never bothered to even say "boo".

That doesn't bother me; I'd rather have a smaller community of higher quality members than a large membership that's a bunch of angry, fighting wannabees.

As it stands, when we started planning the AW, we were expecting to have a membership of around 800; that we kicked past 1000 a week or so ago is incredible, and Leigh actually asked the question over the weekend as to whether we might even hit 1100 by the AW.

I have to accept that as a very real possibility right now ...

And we have about 175 in the Members' users group. That's more than 30 posts, etc, and have asked me to join the group. There's more that have achieved the posting criteria, but the've not yet asked ...

As a very new member, I might be able to shed some light on this...

For starters, I'm too new/inexperienced/thick to take a descent shot for this competition

But I also don't have a d70 as yet - and as the comp required that the picture be taken with a d70, I couldn't have entered even if I had lots of posts, experiece etc.

I'd been browsing this forum for tips for ages as a "guest" but I thought that it was time I became a member so that I could contribute when I had something useful to say. I'd say there's probably a few people out there in the same boat as me.

Sadly, this is probably pretty accurate as well. Not quite sure why people sign up for stuff for a couple of weeks and then move on......

I do think it has a lot to do with confidence and just not being able to think of anything that fits the theme. I know I struggled to find anything for this one, and I didn't enter the last comp because I couldn't find anything that worked well enough for me that I thought it would be worth entering.

Just went bakc and tweaked my votes. Its interesting what a return viewing can do - bumped a few up, but largely result was to bump some down having reflected more on the theme.

On the question of submitting - I personally find these very difficult and, while it would be nice to win, have no expectations in that regard . The real joy for me is that the challenge forces me to think outside my photographic square and that's more than enough reason for the existence of the comp IMHO.

You could've had a D50, a D70, a D70s, or I think a D100 to enter...

Please don't get me wrong here, I wasn't complaining about the entry conditions at all, like I said, I'm new to this forum and on an extremely steep learning curve , I was just wondering whether it might explain why some registered members who have been around a lot longer than me did not submit pics. ??

Well, submitting a pic in the competition is one thing.

However, submitting a pic in the "Images Reviews" section can be something anyone can do... whether it be a Nikon, Canon, Sony, Ricoh, etc... any camera there.

I'm still not sure why you'd join up if you really have nothing to say... I mean, if it's going to be "I'll join up because I might say something later," fine... but why not just sign up then?!

One of the really great things about this challenge is that it had me challenged for weeks. I was actually walking the streets and driving all over attempting to look at the world as a photographic opportunity.

I don't have any illusions of winning but if I did it would be a bonus, I think the way I have had to view what was happening around me has been a win. I hope that whenever I go out with my camera I can see the activities of where I end up the way I was seeing it trying to find the decisive moment.



Better get another coffee, system is weakening and getting maudlin.

Does anyone find that many of them are photos for the themes sake and not for the photo's sake? Just wondering. I'm finding that many of the pictures fail to qualify as really good photos, while nevertheless being a moment decided?

Personally, I believe that the interpretation of the theme is as individualistic as the theme itself

The decisive moment, as Cartier-Bresson tersely defined it, is ‘the simultaneous recognition, in a fraction of a second, of the significance of an event as well as the precise organization of forms which gives that event its proper expression."

Bresson was not happy with the term decisive moment and preferred Images on the Run (literal translation of Images à la sauvette)
