The colour and contrast in the first shot is gorgeous
framing composition and DOF is excellent.

For me, I like the second one the best. The use of DOF and the right balance of colour saturation balances the highlight of the foreground and background objects well. My eyes are moving in and out of the picture equally to appreciate both. It's like looking at a beautiful flower just to realise that it's surrounded by many other beautiful flowers and what a wonderful feeling it must had been if I were the photographer at that place. It's like being to a floriade in Canberra: how the heck can I focus on one flower when there are so many! That's something special to me because in my view, many macro shots tend to focus on one central theme i.e. the one flower, or the one flower and one bee, so on and so forth.

Ideally the shot would work slightly better if the saturation of the main flower is a wee bit higher. Nevertheless, the picture does it for me. *thumbsup*

Oh yeah - the photo will look much better if you remove your signature and add a suitable border. You can add your signature on to the border if you wish.

Off-topic: is the 85mm the typical portrait lens for you digital people?

I would have one but I use the ever popular 50mm f/1.8 at it's bargain price of under $200 it's a no brainer for the learner's out there like me! :D

The typical portrait lens is the 50 (ideally the 1.4, but the 1.8 is pretty good too) since in the digital world you have a smaller sensor than 35mm film hence the 1.5 multiplier ie 50 x 1.5 = 75 which is close to 85 (traditional for film portraits) whereas 85 x 1.5 = 127 = way too close

Pretty nice. I agree with the signature, but not the border. I find that most borders tend to detract and mess me up. Signatures are even worse, but hey it's not my photo until I crop it out.

Looks like a pretty great lens.

Nice shots. The colour in first one is great. I find red flowers can be very difficult as often the colour seems to blur or bleed together.

Many thanks, to everyone, for the kind comments. :D

Mark, reds are a difficult color, especially vivid reds, for any digital cam, AFAIK.

I usually underexpose the shot and will turn down all of the in-camera settings that affect brightness and saturation. This is especially true in bright sunlight or with direct flash.

Hey Kerry. Great work once again. I'm browsing through your photobase and very impressed. I enjoy the section on photographing photographers. So interesting the looks on people's faces when they frame up. :D
