Playing with a new lens

Thought id have a little play around with my new lens today (Nikon 50mm 1.8D AF) to see what its capable of, or more to the point, what im not capable of. :P

Shot indoors without the use of flash, D70s 1/15sec f1.8 ISO200

Let me know what you think and how i could have made it better.

Try increasing the depth of field by stopping down the aperture. In fact, the 50mm is best from f2.8 and up, though try a bigger apperture for best results.

Love it!!!
Awesome colors!!
A little more depth of field wouldn’t go astray though.

Cheers

I disagree with the previous replies. I love the limited DOF, the image looks a little bit on the fuzzy side but apart from that it hits all my buttons!

Thanks for the comments guys.

Andoru- ill remember that in future about the f2.8 and up thing.

I took the picture at f1.8 for few reasons

1. I wanted to see just how shallow (dont know if this is the correct term) the DOF would really be.
2. There was bugger all light and i didnt have my tripod (lent it to a friend for the weekend).
3. I dont like to bump up the ISO settings, i dont know why really i guess im weird like that.
4. I hate the flash with a passion!

I did take one at f4 and the DOF was alot better but due to the lack of light and tripod i just got camera shake and the real point was to use the lens at f1.8 anyway.

The 50mm 1.8 is arguably the best value lens Nikon makes and you will have a great time experimenting with it. Having that shallow depth of field and a nice sharp lens will open so many new and interesing photos that you would never get otherwise.

Nice photo too. I love the abstract feel that the shallow DOF gives it. It's Arty rather than Scientific, that the larger DOF would have give you at 2.8

Keep it up.

Quite nice, especially with the shallow DOF.

I agree with Killakoala that the 50 f1.8 is probably the best bang for the money in the Nikkor line. I tested it rather thoroughly against a friend's f1.4 and found it slightly less sharp wide open but as good or better from 2.8 on and better contrast too.

If you are refering to the built-in flash, yep, its garbage... but you should see the cool stuff you can do with an SB-800 or three... after our mini-meet in Brisbane last weekend I lust after owning another couple of SB-800s or 600s as much as a new lense. We didnt do any macro stuff with them but i think they would perform very well at that too.

Cheers,

Luke
