TC-17EII - Can not remove...the grey plastic cover on lens side of the TC. It will turn and 15 degress which will allow half the grey plactic cover to become loose but just refuses to go the extra distance. I do not want to stain it incase I do damage to the TC itself. Any ideas out there

Your problems fozzie! When you put the cap back for somehow you didn't align well with the slots and now it stuck. Try to turn hard and it'll release. I had two people came to me with the grey cap stuck. Birddog114

Re: TC-17EII - Can not remove...Birddog114,
Took your advice, problem solved, thank you once again. The thing I am surprised is that I did not force it on. What I have noticed is the when the cap was on the TC, the Nikon name was upside down I will not repeat this again. fozzie

fozzie,
I did it to myself long time ago with the TC1.4, at that time the colour of the cap wasn't grey, it was black, looked similar to the body cap but difference part number, I was panic but I forced it hard from my hand and it released, so I learned. Birddog114

I had this problem at the Grand Prix and in my haste I pulled it off. Not sure if I did any permanent damage or what but I did take off one of the tabs on the grey cover. It's annoying as buggery!

I used a few more choice words than bugger, when I could not get the plastic cap off...
I wanted to use the TC-17EII yesterday at the Meet and could not because of the problem. But I was a camper during the course of today when problem solved. Last edited by fozzie on Mon Aug 01, 2005 11:11 pm, edited 1 time in total.

dot marks the spotHTH,
when you look at the grey cap of the TC 17 which is the cover for the lens side of the TC, notice that there is a little embossed circle with a dot, straight line above the letter P in the "> open" writing which itself is straight above the "Nikon" writing. I actually have touched up that highly invisible marker with a permanent felt pen (put a black dot in its spot). Works well. Cheers CD
Interestingly I've never had this problem since I've only ever put the grey cap back on my once. The rest of the time it's been attached to my 70-200 and so needs only the black end cap. Yes, I know I'm losing a stop and a bit, but I invariably find I need the reach so, being a lazy bastard, I have decided that I now have a Nikkor 119-340/f4 that cost me about twice the price of an 80-400/f4.5-5.6, but has better bokeh and an optional negative teleconverter

stubbsy/Peter,
What happens when you buy a Nikkor 200-400VR and you need a TC to assist for closeups of nude bathers at Nelson Bay fozzie

ROFL! It's f/4.8, but it's sharper wide open too. Gotta love that (-)TC1.7; wish it cost -$500 though!
Stubbsy, I was doing what you did, but now have bought the 300/4 and leave the TC on that and have regained my 70-200. Works nicely.

Dean If you want to sign up for a meet to take naked pics you can - but you'll need to practice first using the mirror in your motel room - then post the pics in our reviews and crtiques area for comment Peter

Talk about a twist...I was once reposing on the beach fully clothed when I noticed a group of naked photographers hiding in the bushes taking photographs of me. When I tried to challange them they scurried away murmuring something about a "decisive moment". Damned sicko's!
