how to register a dowmain name?

i wanted to register a domain name but i don't where to start, who to pay or how much it will cost in the long run.
can anyone help me?

Yep.

Depending on what sort of domain name you are after, depends on who you can register with. If you are happy with a .com name, then I recommend GoDaddy (http://www.godaddy.com), who are an american company, but have very, very good prices. My domain name (http://www.ozonejunkie.com) is registered with them, and it costs me about AU$10 per year. However, that comes with no web space.

Web space is required to actually "hold" the webpage. They do also have hosting planes available, for approx AU$60 per year.

If you are interested in .com.au, then the choices are a little bit more limited, and I can't reccommend anyone. However, I did see a few places advertising ~$50 per year. (domain name only).

You will need a credit card no matter who you use.

First you need to decide what domain name you want.. if it's a .com domain name, it's cheaper and easier to get than a .com.au domain. The .com.au domain requires a company ABN or business number, and the domain must be directly correlated to the business name somehow.

The kind of charges your up for is:

Domain registration: Anywhere from a 5-10 bucks, to a couple of hundred.. Eg. Melbourne IT used to charge $125 per year for a .com.au domain. Most .com domains available over the 'net are around $10. Personally, i'd recommend a .com domain name if it's for yourself.

You will probably delegate it and use the free services of the registrar eg. email etc, but if you want to host a website somewhere, you will need a webhost somewhere, and that can cost approx. the same again.. eg. $5 - several hundred depending on who with, and what you want.

I hosted my domain with http://www.dotearth.com which is pretty good.. a little more expensive, but still reasonable.

.com.au is also available as a personal address, but it has to be directly resulted to your given name. Makes it a bit of a pain.

Redline, I am sure that there are many more qualified folks in this forum, but just to add my two cents worth. I registered with melbounreIT, I would suggest going with a .com as they are much cheaper. Once you have got your URL go and visit http://www.zoneedit.com This is a free service and you can use it to direct your new URL to an exisiting website that you are using. For example if you are using smugmug to host your pictures you can redirect your new URL to the smugmug site. Zoneedit also allows you to redirect your email.
But as I said to begin with there are many more web savvy folks in this forum.

intresting stuff, i had a look at yahoo domain registed they wanted 70$ for a 2year com.au rego.

so theres no beneifit of going to a certain places? i know that they would be cheaper/more $$, but could close up shop and take down my rego with them?

Registration doesn't take long, but it won't be visible to other servers on the Internet usually for a day or two. It's first got to appear on the internic database, and then slowly propogate out to the Internet. I've seen it take as long as 72 hours, or longer, if the ISP has a very slow TTL on their DNS.

While this is true, i've yet to see any registrar's have this issue. http://www.dotearth.com has been around for years, as has godaddy.com.. both are much cheaper..

I've found the bigger the company, the more they charge.. sort of like the Telstra syndrome.. they know they'll get people signing up due to the size, so they charge what they can get away with.

What the others have said is pretty well on the mark.

We use GoDaddy, and have been for several years, and with maybe a dozen different domains.

Their basic cost is less than US$9/p.a. for registration, and from US$4 per month for hosting services. You can get a .com, .net, or .org (amongst others) from them. I wouldn't be bothered with a .com.au domain because of the interference from our beloved legislators.

And depending upon your ISP, self hosting from home is also a possibility. Any Exetel and many Swiftel customers can already do this for no additional cost.

For a .com.au name, you will need an ABN to register. Have a look at
http://www.netregistry.com.au/ for domain registry. I also highly recommend http://www.interconnet.com.au for webhost.
