It was late on a Saturday afternoon, and I went down to Newcastle baths with a friend of mine. He took his new 17-35 2.8 out of the box, and said that I could take the first shots with it! This is one of those shots. Not sure if it is my favourite from the session, so I might post another - or is that not allowed? Is this supposed to be a competition, or a learning experience? HB
Having a few minutes to myself this arvo and with such a beautiful clear blue sky, thought I'd have a go with the new 55-200 dx lens.
Mundane subject but I think it shows that the d50 & 'el cheapo' lens combination works well. Still looking for my "eye". No filters used, only pp is size reduced and crunched for web & frame added. yeah go ahead i'm not to fussed over it.
definitely not a competition about who can post the 'bluest' photo, just a learning experience for those who want to contribute.
OK, here is my image for this exercise. The thought I had in my mind was, using depth of field, I would have the focus plane in line with the colour BLUE.
For this exercise I used the following equipment: D70 Sigma 70-300 APO II Super Macro Lens SB800 (on iTTL) Coloured Pencils I set my focus on the BLUE range of pencils, leaving the other colours OOF, whilst using a relatively short DOF, in macro mode. The result was: PP consisted of: slight crop | Levels | Smart Sharpen | added frame & EXIF info In this, I feel I demonstrated how controlling DOF can bring an important part of the image to the viewers attention. Hopefully, you agree.... Dave

Dave, i certainly agree! fantastic use of DOF to emphasis the theme! but there's one pencil thats been sharpen too much!
agreed - if the pencil was blue it would be really suitable HB
hhmmm...perhaps I went a little too overboard with the sharpening then Dave

Here's a quick entry from me.
Not entirely happy with it, but I thought I could post it here and see how it goes. Taken today as part of the Lavender Bay/Sydney Harbour Bridge stroll. Reflection of the ferris wheel in a puddle on the ground. 1/320, f4.5 200iso 70mm Feedback? Cheers Deb Last edited by HappyFotographer on Sat Aug 06, 2005 4:52 pm, edited 1 time in total.

Heath, as usual incredible images.
Do you mind sharing the exif.....especially for Slow Sad Blue thanks Deb "Sometimes when you are sad Poko, it's good to hug the monkey."
Dave great contribution...well thought out.
Love it. So who has the red fetish in your family? Cheers Deb "Sometimes when you are sad Poko, it's good to hug the monkey."
IMHO interesting interpretation of the theme, i like . the other coloured carraige detract from the middle blue carraige, but i think there is nothing u can do about it.
Thanks Deb. From memory, I used this red pencil for something I did in art school years ago. The Prussian Blue pencil is even smaller. Perhaps I should have taken a photo of this for the BLUE theme ??? Dave

I already posted a picture of that tree painted in blue. I went back today and took a few shots. There are a couple angles that I had to choose from. They all were taken with the Sigma 12-24 set a 12 . This one is at f8, but f10 or 11 might have been better for depth of field.
I really like the pictures posted so far. Cheers, Gerard
That's interesting, though was that photoshopped? Check out my latest - http://englishnewbies.tripod.com/blog

The photoshoping included standard levels, sharpening, etc. I wasn't happy with the light grey grotty ground that the puddle was on, so I selected the grey areas and performed another levels adjustment on just them to try and "improve" on them.....not sure it did much good and did give a bit of a funky outline around the puddle (my photoshop skills are really quiet limited).....but that was the image as I saw it.

My ES entry,
Taken with D70s, 50mm 1.4 lens, f2.5, 1/20s. This is my first attempt at using a lightbox. Followed the example posted in one of the forums a short while ago. I think my lights were not quite strong enough. Comments welcomed. Radar - considering you are using a blue background and the unit itself has bluelighting the result is very good IMO

Nice one Bob,
Could do without the added blue border in my opinion. Radar, The problem is NEVER the strength of the light but the placement. Lighting advice and schematics posted on the web can only ever hope to be the very loosest of an indication. In EVERY case you have to LIGHT THE SUBJECT. Watch the subject as you move either it or the lamps or both, and when it starts to sing you have found the spot. In the particular case where a great deal of the blue background material has reflected into the reflective casing of the phone a simple remedy would be to place a sheet of white paper on the deck making sure to keep it our of shot. This is not the entire slution - the lights do need different placement as well. You don't say whether this was flash of tungsten - either way, the exposure for the internal illumination of the device requires more exposure. Another tip for close-up shots like this is to ensure that the last thing you do beofre you release the shutter is give the subject a gentle wipe ofver with a soft brush to remove any moon rocks that land on the surface. Often it is handy to keep one of those old electro-static dust zappers that were used with 12 inch vinyls in their day. A room ioniser can also be a benefit - I use them in my darkroom (remember them?) and in the room where I store my negs and trannies. Cheers, _______________

As a public service, I've brought everything together here... I'll update this at the end of the exercise... If anyone has a problem with me replicating their pic on smugmug, please PM me and I'll remove it.
I can see I'll have to put my serious shooting hat on this weekend to match some of these shots... Click any pic for larger version... Cheers, John

Kipper that is me in the blue shot, i look like a freak because i set the flash on full intensity, the blue gell exentuates tones, rather than the effect of a red gelled flash which smoothes out tones. I was trying to get a real bold and 'Black & White' magazine type shot
Good point... I didn't notice that. Maaayyybe its metered for 2 seconds, and I had it on manual at 1.6? RAWShooter says 1.6 sec. The file was converted using RAWShooter, and rezized in IrfanView (which is what I got the ExIf from). Odd. This is all the ExIf from IrfanView.
