dpreview in turmoil re new Canon rumour

Postby johndec on Wed Aug 10, 2005 9:13 pm

Not that I'm one to spread rumours  but the specs of the "supposed" 20D replacement may have been leaked. It looks to me to be an elaborate fake, but it comes with photos and even a copy of an inhouse pdf file. Someone has gone to a lot of trouble if it's a gee up

Anyway, in the last 24 hours there has been about 3 gazillion posts on both Nikon and Canon forums about it. In a nutshell, it's a 20D with a 12.8 MP full frame sensor shoehorned into it.

I kind of hope it's true as it will force Nikon to use the 12.4 MP sensor in the D100 replacement (AKA D200).

12.4 DX or 12.8 FF? I'll take the DX model please

I was just thinking, from this side of the fence - I don't care what the 5D has to offer, I care what Nikon's response will be when they release its competitive equivalent.

Going from that PDF, it looks like Canon's finally caught on and used Nikonesque function buttons (ie. simplified), yet another area where Nikon got it right the first time and Canon have switched back and forth trying to find a workable solution before inevitably copying Nikon's efforts. Have a look at claimed battery life specs - it's still pathetic compared to Nikon's current day models. And they finally have 1/3 stop ISO adjustments, as Nikon always had; and that blasted spot meter finally makes it on there too.

My prediction: this model will either be the downfall of full frame, or mark a turning point in digital sensor history (I'm hoping the former).

How about a lobotomised D2X? IE:

- 12.4MP sensor
- Slower frame rate
- No High speed crop mode
- CAM1300 instead of CAM2000 (or perhaps something inbetween CAM1500?)
- Optional vertical grip
- D2X viewfinder (dreaming but hoping)

I'm still siding with the likelihood they'll want something superior in megapixels to the Canon and D2x but with similar features to the D100.

Have they got a 14-16mp sensor?

John,

the 12MP D2x sensor is pretty much a given for the D200 IMHO, and 'twas always thusly. If you think about it, there isn't any other choice for Nikon.

But the thought of a 12MP FF sensor has me salivating .... my wide angle lenses become wide angle lenses again .... even lower noise levels than the D2x with larger photosites ....

If they get the price right - as they did with the 300D - this will most certainly be the cat amongst the Dx pigeons.

FF will be happened with Nikon camp, don't know when but it's not far away. It's in the very near future.
I'm waiting for it at any cost, I have the glasses ready for it and I always bought the non DX glasses, except some glasses which I want are not in the range, so I have to get the DX instead of.

If the new Canon is FF, expect Nikon to make an annoucement in February next year.

If it's not, we'll be waiting for a further 12 - 18 months down the track.

I'd be keen as mustard to see Nikon's response, the jockeying by different vendors with new, more advanced models benefits all but after investing in DX glass I'd be wanting to stick with DX sized sensors for now...

But you only have a Nikkor 12-24Dx, why should you worry, that can be trade off for something new if you're heading to the FF format.

You're probably right Birdy, just unsure of just how much benefit there is in going to FF, maybe less digitial noise? Wider wide-angle etc...? Not convinced of the benefits Vs costs...

That looks like a Photochop job to me.

Why would it be the EOS 2D MkIII, when there's not been been a MkI or MkII yet?

While I don't doubt the existance of an upcoming/replacement camera, this is not likely to be the real deal.

Most definately a Photoshop job.

If you look closely at the 1D where the infra-red sensor is positioned and then look closely at the 2D at the same spot the infra-red snesor is on teh 1D, you can see a poor PS job next to the handgrip.

Also the non-slip hand-hold grooving is EXACTLY the same below the shutter button.

Also the entire top of the camera including Shutter button area, logo and even the lens mount and sensor cavity is exactly the same in both the 1D and the 2D photos.

Compelling evidence? I think so.

Want more?

The font for the numbers EOS-1 and EOS-2, the 2 is a different font to the others numbers and letters, AND the non-slip grip on that part of the camera is EXACTLY the same in BOTH images.

I think that is enough.
Steve.

There's defiantly some photoshop going on in the "2D". Look at the bottom 1/4 of the grip there's some misaligned shading, reflection and the pixels look quite irregular compared to the to 3/4. In addition to that the font for the "Mark III Digital" is the same as the "Mark II Digital" on the 1Ds except for it has been vertically compressed, this is a big "No No" in any design, either another font would be used or a reduced font size not a single axis compression.
I'm not convinced.

The funniest thing to me about this is that whoever did the PS work spent time they could have used to go out and take some pics!
