Another thing to add to the wish list..
the telescope, not the canon Very nice, anymore? Deb "Sometimes when you are sad Poko, it's good to hug the monkey."
Very cool, thank you.
Can I ask you to post some exif data, please? "Sometimes when you are sad Poko, it's good to hug the monkey."
Those are great V. What lens did you use? Daniel Nikon D4, D2Xs, D70, Nikkors and Sigmas lenses from 10 to 400mm

Deb, all shot at 1600 ISO, top photo 5 minutes, bottom 2 were 30 seconds each, using the 50mm 1.8 lens. Third shot has been cropped to emphasise the southern cross....No dark frames used on the last 2 but one used for the 5 minute shot

My foray into astrophotography is basically aiming my camera at the moon and pressing the shutter, but I would like to learn more.
Your images are great, thanks for sharing them. (To see your last images though, I had to take the /gallery out of your link) cheers Deb "Sometimes when you are sad Poko, it's good to hug the monkey."
Deb, fixed the link now, that is a good way to start and you might like to try doing some long exposure stuff using your camer and its lens. Once you start going for the long exposure photos, you need very accurate tracking of the sky and this is when it gets difficult. It is worth the effort though..good luck with your attempts

Man, these are terrific! I never would have thought you could pull something like this out of the lens/camera. What telescope do you use and is there a special attachment required?

Very nice captures Big V.
I am assuming you don't take your shots in Adelaide (due to light pollution) and am wondering where you go? Do you head up to Stockport? or Walker Flat? I have never tried astophotography, but have pointed a telescope skywards on many occasions with the kids in my science classes at school. Can you offer any suggestions on where to take these sorts of shots? Never argue with an idiot. They drag you down to their level, then beat you with experience.
Thanks for the location info Big V.
I was curious as I have had issues with light pollution here in Gawler and was wondering how far afield you travelled. My outlaws (oops - inlaws) live about 20mins North of Stockport so I must remember to take by gear up there next time we visit. If I fluke a good capture - I'll post it Thanks. Never argue with an idiot. They drag you down to their level, then beat you with experience.
Meerkat, you are always welcome to the Stockport observatory on a public night.. sessions are found here http://www.assa.org.au
You will find the people very friendly and only to willing to help. If astronomy photos are something you are interested in, then I am happy to organise a night for the adelaide group to give it a try... Canon
Thanks Big V.
Yes - I have been aware that ASSA has public nights at Stockport, but have never actually got to one. Although, a little while ago now, I was privledged to be able to spend an evening with an astronomy guru gazing in wonder through his telescope (30" from memory) at Riverton. It was awesome!! I don't know about other local members, but I would DEFINITELY be interested in a meet to learn more about astrophotography. Count me in for sure!! Never argue with an idiot. They drag you down to their level, then beat you with experience.
You can count me in! I would enjoy seeing what's involved in getting these sort of photos. Mark
Meerkat, That would be Ian Bedfords, which he has just moved it to near Burra. Looks like I will have to organise a night for the adelaide members as there is enough interest. We will look to doing this in spring time to improve the chances of cloud free nights....
Canon
Yes it was Ian's. I didn't know whether it was appropriate to mention him by name. It was a couple of years ago. My outlaws lived only a few houses away on the same street.
A spring meet would be good. Never argue with an idiot. They drag you down to their level, then beat you with experience.
Looking at the lunar cycle, the best time would be very early in the month so that it coincides with a New moon (or close to it). October? November? Is it worth starting a thread in the Adelaide section??
