180 2.8D IF-ED

Picked up one of these a few weeks ago, and am absolutely loving it.

Extremely sharp, a great size and weight, and I love the fast aperture. Focus speed is good (though I don't have an 80-200 to compare it to), and the build is absolutely rock solid.

I know I shouldn't go around shooting everything at f/2.8, but I'm having too much fun

I was tossing up between one of these, or an 80-200/2.8 (70-200VR is just a tad out of my price range!). I was leaning towards the 180 for reduced size and weight, and the clincher was getting a great deal on one.

Overall, extremely happy!

It is surely a great lens - I used one for about 4 years and love it - just recently upgraded to the 70-200VR - but when prime is more appropriate I still occasionally grab the 180

How much did you pick it up for?

Sure - you can see the details for all the images via the details + comments link on the top right. That particular image was taken with the kit lens at 35mm, 2/3 sec, F/29 @ ISO 200. Small aperture to get the longer shutter speed.

It was actually taken without a tripod, but with the camera braced on a railing (gotta get a tripod....)

I agree glc, this shot is fantastic (not to detract from those linked above).

All the more surprising that you didn't have a tripod - don't say that too loud, people are spending small fortunes on legs and heads at the moment

I am very keen to do shots like this (darb has some nice examples of time exp of flowing water too).

Thanks for all the compliments! I guess if there were handy bracing points everywhere I wanted to take pictures, I wouldn't need a tripod

good (lucky?) buy second hand off ebay out of the US. I've seen a few come up and go for prices not dissimilar. Was luckly to find this one in mint condition.
